The way societies treat their older members reveals their deepest values. Aging is not merely a biological process; it is a social, ethical, and cultural journey in which dignity must remain the cornerstone. Yet, for millions of older people worldwide, dignity is fragile, threatened by poverty, isolation, violence, forced displacement, and discrimination based on age or gender. We offer here a joint perspective, both clinical, scientific and humanistic, reflecting the voice of a geriatrician and that of a defender of human rights honored with the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. Dignity is not a secondary consideration in later life but a universal imperative that must guide healthcare systems, public policies, and societal attitudes toward aging.
